P.A. gets ready to host the best-of-the-best for the Ladies Northern Championships

Another big provincial tournament is making its way to Prince Albert this weekend.

The Northern Ladies Championship will take over Cooke Municipal Golf Course on Saturday and Sunday, bringing the best amateur golfers to the area.

Jackie Packet with the tournament committee told paNOW they are expecting 68 golfers from across the province to participate.

“It’s actually almost like a dual tournament. So, we will crown ladies champion and we’ll also crown a senior ladies champion.”

The tournament isn’t just a fun event for the golfers, it also helps with their standings during the 2023 season, as they receive points based on their finish.

Last summer, Kathy Ziglo won the overall title with a two-day score of 164, while Dianne Bethune won the Senior Ladies’ title with 167. Both women hail from Saskatoon.

Already, it’s been a busy season for the local golf course as it already hosted this year’s Northern Team Championships which was won by Bryan Matkowski and Denver Grolla of Saskatoon.

The course will also host the Men’s Northern and Senior Men’s Northern Championships in August.

For now, Cooke is looking forward to the Ladies Northern event and hopes the weather will play nice.

“We’re kind of got our eye on the sky and we may get a couple of little thundershowers here and there,” said Packet. ”But it looks like the weather is going to cooperate for us and the ladies are always happy to play our golf courses in excellent condition.”
