4,000 square foot liquor store permit approved for The Yard

City council has approved a development permit for an 8,000-square-foot building with half of the space set for retail liquor sales, another 2,000 square feet of coolers and the remainder to be office space.

Construction will start in the next month, planning manager Craig Guidinger told council Monday afternoon.

The applicants, Abdul and Faizan Hirani who are father and son, already operate Bailey’s Cold Beer and Wine Store and will move their operations once the new building is complete next spring.

The liquor store is one permit but the applicants are also planning to build a luxury hotel nearby. They have not yet applied for that permit.

“Construction will begin on the 100-room hotel in spring of 2024. We are working with a well recognized luxury branded franchise that is not currently flagged in the city,” said the Hiran’s letter.

The brand was not named but they said that it will complement the nearby recreation and sports centre currently being built by the city.

The hotel would take about 16 months to complete.

The Hiranis said the timing is planned to be slightly after the arenas and pool are open to taking advantage of an expected influx of visitors and travellers.

A similar announcement was made by the family in the past for a Premier Best Western.
