Île-à-la-Crosse students win provincial gold, off to national skills competition for robotics

It was a golden finish for students at Rossignol High School in Île-à-la-Crosse at the recent Skills Canada Saskatchewan Provincials.

The team won gold in robotics and is off to nationals, representing the province next week in Winnipeg.

The students also finished first, second, and third in the Modified Robot category at this year’s Sask Polytech Robot Rumble.

For student Ethan Mackenzie, he said the experience at provincials was a memorable one.

“I met many new people over there, it was an amazing adventure,” he said. “We just went there to have fun and play our game.”

The last time Rossignol High School won at provincials, the competition was held virtually, so being able to go to nationals in person is a big step for Mackenzie and the team.

“Going to nationals, a first for myself and a first for the school. I believe that the school will take this as a note to other people who want to join robotics.”

So how are the students feeling as they get ready for the national competition? Mackenzie noted he is nervous but looking forward to the experience.

“It’s a little nerve-wracking since we’re representing the whole of Saskatchewan, so we’re trying to process as much as possible to be better prepared nationally.”

Ethan along with his teammate Brady Gardiner are hoping this experience will be a positive story not just for the field of robotics but other students who are pursuing skilled trades.

“If you want to make it to nationals, it’s all in the effort that you show, that will really get you there,” said Mackenzie.

The Skills Canada National Competition will run May 25 to 26 at the RBC Convention Centre in Winnipeg.
