Former MLA hopes to grab NDP nomination for P.A. – Northcote

A familiar face hopes to represent Prince Albert – Northcote once again in the next provincial election.

Earlier this month, former MLA Nicole Rancourt announced she is seeking the NDP nomination for the riding. She served as the legislative member for the area from 2016 to 2020, losing out to Alana Ross in the 2020 election.

Rancourt believes her experience as an MLA makes her a prime candidate to represent the riding and community once again.

“I see this as a really good time to be engaged and be involved again and hopefully help people have proper representation in Prince Albert.”

She said she has heard from many residents in the past couple of years, who believe the Sask. Party government has lost touch.

“We see families are struggling with paying their bills, they’re struggling to get health care when they need and having to even travel outside their home communities,” she said adding there is frustration over the government’s plan for surgeries to be completed in Alberta.

Rancourt also said education is a big concern she’s hearing from residents.

“People are concerned about the education of their children and their grandchildren with what they see as being a lack of investment in education.”

Rancourt is seeking the NDP nomination which could come by this summer. If she succeeds, she plans to hit the doorsteps of residents including those new to the area as the provincial electoral boundaries will be changing.

While voters aren’t expected to head to the polls until 2024, Rancourt said she is looking forward to an “exciting election.”

“Especially with urban voters that are unhappy with this government with the priorities of health care and education,” she said. “The fact that Prince Albert residents are unhappy with the lack of mental health services that are provided in this city. The fact that our crime rate has not decreased under this government’s guidance.”

Right now, there is no word on any other candidates who are also seeking the Prince Albert–Northcote nomination for the NDP.
