Car vandal receives 90-day jail sentence

A woman who stood by and watched as her accomplice smashed dozens of vehicle windows with a small bat has received a 90-day jail sentence.

Sunshine Bird, 23, appeared by video, when her case was discussed Thursday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court. A guilty plea was entered to a single count of mischief, but accounted for nine separate incidents..

During the month of December, Prince Albert police received over 100 reports of mischief and theft. In many cases windows were smashed and nothing was taken at all.

Bird was one of three people arrested and told police the man she was with for the majority of the offences, later identified as Henry Charles, went on a rampage.

Bird and a male youth were arrested on Dec. 6, 2022, following complaints of vandalism in the city’s east flat area and were caught walking along the street.

Bird, who is a member of the Mistawasis First Nation, also entered a guilty plea for a theft that occurred earlier in the month at Access Place.

She stole a wallet from a vehicle belonging to a staff member, and then used the debit card to buy items from a restaurant and two convenience stores.

Bird’s lawyer Evan Strelioff explained she was introduced to meth at the age of 17 and her offences were related to that, as well as her transient lifestyle.

Following her release from custody, Bird has indicated plans to move to Saskatoon and complete her grade 12.

Representing one of his final sentencing hearings before retirement, Judge Gerald Morin encouraged Bird to seek help for her addictions issues, and warned her the ‘price goes up’, if she continues to live this lifestyle.

“Otherwise you’ll find yourself wasting time in jail,” he said.

With credit for time spent in remand, Bird has roughly 49 days left to serve. There was no probation ordered.
