Major projects pass next hurdle at City Hall

Development of two large projects in Prince Albert’s South Hill area has each passed another hurdle at City Hall, on the road to becoming reality.

Council approved a development permit application for three apartment buildings near the Victoria Hospital and also re-zoned 1.5 hectares of land to allow the Métis Nation — Saskatchewan to build an office nearby.

There was no discussion and a unanimous vote for the MN—S re-zoning. The organization hopes to build a 10,000-square-foot office space, called the MA Faamii Centre. MA Faamii is the Michif phrase for my family, a description of the building’s purpose.

Along with providing services to Métis people, there will be a child care centre and regional offices that function as a hub.

The MN—S has the option to buy the land, located south of the Alfred Jenkins Field House, from the current owners.

The land in between has been designated medium-density residential, something the MN —S is hoping to do with the remaining unused portion of the 26 acres it is buying.

To the east of the Field House, another project was re-zoned and received its development permit at Monday’s meeting.

Brar Developments was given permission to build three apartment towers with 174 units.

The first two buildings will have 116 units. Discussion is ongoing about parking and landscaping for the third building, but the Development office recommended council approve the application anyway.

The Directors of Community Services, Planning and Development and Public Works must all approve the site plan for the third building before it can proceed.

Council also passed a recommendation by staff to set aside part of the 1000 block of 28 Street West and the 1700 Bloc of 15th Avenue East for future fire stations.
