Sandy Bay man pleads guilty to manslaughter, sentenced to seven years in prison

A northern Saskatchewan man has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

Lenny Sinclair, 25, from Sandy Bay, was initially facing a second-degree murder charge in the death of 54-year-old Jacob Sewap, before pleading guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter.

The case was spoken to Monday afternoon at Court of King’s Bench in Melfort.

Sinclair has spent 545 days in remand since being arrested in Pelican Narrows in October of 2021.

With a one-and-a-half multiplying credit, Sinclair’s 2,555-day sentence has been reduced to 1,737 days, due to time already served.

According to the prosecution, Sinclair hasn’t fared all too well in custody so far, having been found with drugs, alleging attacking other inmates and fighting.

In a statement to the court, Sinclair said that although he doesn’t remember much from the incident (as he was intoxicated), he did take responsibility for his beating Sewap to death.

“I’m sorry to the family that I hurt. I was dumb and drunk and I didn’t mean to,” he said.

In court, Sewap was described as a vulnerable man, who didn’t do anything to provoke the attack, and that Sinclair was asked to leave the Sandy Bay residence, prior to the assault.

Sewap’s daughter, Jessica, was the only member of his family in court, and was asked by northeastNOW for a comment, however, did not want to speak on the traumatizing matter.

On Dec. 20, 2020, 54-year-old Jacob Sewap Sr. was found by police at a home in Sandy Bay, suffering from severe injuries. He passed away three weeks later, while still in hospital.
