Mustangs head to La Ronge with chance to get to second round

The Melfort Mustangs are getting their first chance to close out a series in the 2023 SJHL Playoffs.

Game six of their series with the La Ronge Ice Wolves goes on Sunday evening in La Ronge, back at the Mel Hegland Uniplex. It’ll be the first game of the series at the Uniplex after games three and four needed to be moved due to ice issues.

A win on Sunday would give the Mustangs their first series win since April 7, 2019, a semi-final series win against the Estevan Bruins, winning in six games.

In this series, the Mustangs have ran into a hot goalie, and have only scored twice on the powerplay, but after the year the Mustangs had, forward Dawson Leroux says they’re battle tested.

“We went through a lot this year, a lot of highs and lows,” he said. “And I think that’s only made us better through the stretch and I think that’s made us more confident heading into playoffs, knowing we can get it done every night.”

Melfort is coming off a 2-1 overtime thriller win on Friday at the Palace.

Game time at the Mel Hegland Uniplex on Sunday is 5 p.m. and you can catch all the action on 105 CJVR.
