James Smith Cree Nation Chief charged with impaired driving

The Chief of Chakastaypasin Band at James Smith Cree Nation is facing a serious charge.

paNOW has learned that 62-year-old Calvin Sanderson was arrested on March 10, and charged with impaired driving.

According to information provided by RCMP, at the time of the offence, officers were conducting proactive patrols in James Smith Cree Nation.

Officers conducted a traffic stop and as a result of observation, initiated an impaired driving investigation.

Sanderson is scheduled to appear in Melfort Provincial Court on May 29.

According to a source who spoke with paNOW, Sanderson was spotted at the bar, buying shots for people.

According to the JSCN website, Sanderson is still recognized as Chief of Chakastaypasin Band and his current term is set to expire in April 2024.

paNOW attempted to call the band administration but no one was available for comment.
