New spray park, playground coming for Midtown in 2024

Mar 7, 2023 | 8:32 AM

The Midtown Community Centre will get a new spray park and playground thanks to a promised donation of $250,000 from Canadian Tire owner Malcolm Jenkins.

Council was told by Community Services Director Jody Boulet that playgrounds are seeing increased use all months of the year and that this new play area will take that into account.

“We are pleased to see the increased use all year round. Certainly in the design of this location, we’ll be considering any components or any surfacing that can assist that all-year-round use,” Boulet said.

Included in the plan are 10 components for the splash pad, the underground works, the water and sewer supply and a playground area over 4,000 square feet in size with rubber paving.

The playground will have just under 20 pieces and is located closer to the community centre than the existing one.

Benches, picnic tables, garbage bins, lighting and security cameras will also be added.

The total cost is expected to be $650,000 with $400,000 coming from the City and the rest from Jenkins.

The project is planned to go ahead in 2024 but ordering times have increased following the pandemic so city staff asked to have approval now.

A staff memo to council showed that backlogs of equipment supply mean that orders can take between six and eight months to fill or even as long as a year before they are delivered.

The contractors needed to install the equipment are also backed up, with eight-month waiting times. A vendor has already been contacted to book construction and installation for spring for the Midtown project.

Several years ago, an order placed in February or March would be delivered and installed by June or July of the same year.

Because of that, the new equipment will not be built or delivered until March 2024 but staff want to decommission the old spray park at the end of this summer.
