Psychiatric assessment to be ordered for man accused of stabbing young child at Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation

Mar 2, 2023 | 5:00 PM

A 19-year-old man accused of stabbing a young child this week at Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation has no recollection of the event or understanding of the court process.

Those comments were made by lawyers Thursday, when the case returned to Prince Albert Provincial Court.

The accused appeared by phone and when told about the charges he faces, replied, “oh okay.”

The case has been adjourned to Friday morning to finalize the ordering of a psychiatric assessment, as concerns have been raised with respect to whether the man is fit to stand trial.

The assessment would be done at Sask. Hospital in North Battleford.

To protect the privacy of the young victim, the man’s name is not being published.

A source close to the incident confirmed the victim is 11 years old and remains in hospital. The source also confirmed the accused and the victim are related.

On Tuesday morning, RCMP received a call of a serious assault at a home on the First Nation west of Prince Albert.

Officers later found an injured child, who was taken to hospital by STARS Air Ambulance with serious injuries. The 19-year-old has been charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.
