A man who once dominated the wrestling mat for St. Mary High School, continues to see succes at the collegiate level.

Cole Sanderson won gold at last weekend’s Can West Championship in Edmonton. Competing in the 68 kg weight class, Sanderson fought twice.

“I felt a little fatigued during the day but I was very confident in my training. I wrestled my opponents earlier in the season so I did have some preparation for this tournament,” Sanderson told paNOW.

After defeating Calgary’s Shane Richards 15-4, Sanderson then went on to face University of Alberta wrestler Isaac Le Morvan and won 10-0.

“My tough match was against Calgary as this was our third matchup of the season where I took all three wins against him by superiority,” Sanderson said.

Huskies Head coach Daniel Olver said Cole had a tough weight class heading into Can West, adding Sanderson had a rematch against a competitor he beat at the Huskie Dual in November.

“That match shook the campus when Cole won. This match was no different as Cole battled the adversity of his opponent and the moment. U SPORTS will be a great test for him because he has not seen the eastern competition in a while. The next week and half will be crucial for getting him prepared for the challenge,” Olver said.

The Huskies captured gold in five weight classes. Saskatchewan also captured both student-athlete community service awards, as Drake Buechler earned the men’s award, and Allison Kuzub won the women’s.

Next on the wrestling calendar is the 2023 U SPORTS Championship, scheduled for February 24 and 25 in Edmonton.
