St. Mary student soon to be big dog on campus

Prince Albert’s Cole Sanderson has moved one step closer to his dream of representing Canada at the Olympics.

The one time national wrestling champion and multi-time provincial wrestling champion, accepted a scholarship offer from the University of Saskatchewan, and will compete for the Huskies next season.

“I like it a lot because I have practiced with them a lot. It just feels like home,” he said.

The scholarship announcement should really come as no surprise to anyone who has witnessed Sanderson in action. He won gold at nationals last year. He also won gold medals at provincials in 2017 and 2018. He said the gold medal he won in his Grade 10 year remains his best accomplishment.

“I don’t think a lot of other people expected me to get a gold medal in Grade 10. I lost a few matches in that season also so winning gold was kind of the cherry on top,” he said.

In addition to wrestling, Sanderson said he also plans to pursue a degree in engineering. But when asked if he ever thought about the Olympics, Sanderson agreed it was not far from his thoughts.

“I think my dream would just be making the Canadian team. I know dreams can be bigger but that’s where it stands for now,” he said.

Prior to moving to Prince Albert for high school, Sanderson grew up at Sturgeon Lake First Nation.
