Prince Albert Winter Festival gears up for 59th installment

Feb 8, 2023 | 6:00 PM

It’s all systems go for the 59th annual Prince Albert Winter Festival.

It’s the second consecutive Winter Festival after the pandemic canceled the event in 2021.

After a successful 2022, coordinator Joel Rohs says that most planned events will be the same as last year with the addition of a new site and venue for live talent and shows.

“We’ve moved a lot of our shows to the exhibition centre,” he said. “We’ve also changed the outdoor site stuff, so now all the outdoor events will be happening west of Canadian Tire on Marquis Drive.”

He explained that live performances kick off this weekend on Feb. 11 at the exhibition centre with The Rock Show Experience. The E.A. Rawlinson Centre is also getting ready for the Festival this weekend where the Fiddle Show is set to hit the stage on Sunday night.

Some of the outdoor events happening include dog sled races and rides along with sleigh rides. Ten different snow sculptures can also be found throughout the city including one outside the Art Hauser Centre, Prince Albert Exhibition Grounds, and more.

The King & Queen Trapper competition is returning for another year of skilled competition with traditional events including Buckskin, animal calling, and portage-sleigh and canoe

Rohs continued by listing some more live acts that are set to perform over the course of the festival.

“Next week is the Voices of the North which features many musicians and singers from Northern Saskatchewan,” he said. “Then we got our Country North Show which has been a longstanding tradition here at the PA Winter Festival, and that features a whole bunch of great local talent. That’s happening Feb. 22 and 23.”
