Abby Soyko was the hero for the University of Alberta (U of A) Pandas on Friday night.

The Prince Albert product and former Northern Bear lifted the U of A to their 15th Canada West Championship after scoring the game winning goal in overtime to win it 2-1 against the UBC Thunderbirds at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre in Vancouver.

The OT winner came with just 14 seconds remaining on the clock and marked her fourth goal of the postseason. Soyko also scored the overtime winning goal in Game 1 as the Pandas swept the Thunderbirds in their two-game series.

“Every championship is done with a different, unique team so it’s different every time and you just really appreciate the opportunity for these guys to appreciate that success,” said Alberta head coach Howie Draper in a release, who has overseen every Canada West title in his program’s first in 1997/98. “We weather the storm and we find ways to get key goals at key times. That’s just been the nature of this team so we’ll see how far it takes us.”

The Championship is the Pandas first since 2020 while for the Thunderbirds, it marks the first conference final series loss in program history after putting up a perfect 6-0 in Canada West championships previously.

Both the U of A and UBC are now off to the U SPORTS National Championship tournament set to begin March 20 in Waterloo, Ontario.
