Local Sharks swim to international success

Dec 22, 2022 | 12:00 PM

Two Prince Albert Sharks won big at the Winnipeg International Championships and Ken Demchuk International Championships this past weekend.

Clara Gelhorn and Ali Diehl participated in the prestigious swimming championships with lots of ambition and returned with plenty of success.

Diehl, 13, competed in Vancouver with the top high-performance Para swimmers. In her class, Ali won the 50-metre, 100-metre, and 400-metre Freestyle events and the 200-meter individual medley.

She was a second in the 100-metre breaststroke where Ali recorded a time close to meeting the national Para-Swimming time trails.

Meanwhile, Gelhorn, 13, competed simultaneously in Winnipeg and put forward a magnificent performance in her first international swimming championships.

She had been sick and only returned to practice a couple of weeks before the competition.

With iron desire, super devotion, and hard work, she cut 52 seconds to set a personal best time and finish fourth in the 1,500-meter freestyle with “AA” time for 14 years old.

Gelhorn also qualified for the finals in the 200-meter butterfly to finish sixth dropping 10 seconds to set another personal best time. She also set a personal best time in the 100-meter Freestyle.

The Prince Albert Sharks offer a variety of programs to meet all athletes’ potentials and ambitions not only on the competitive level but also on the pre-competitive level. Prince Albert Sharks Swim Club accepts year-round registration.
