Christmas yarns needed for next year

Dec 20, 2022 | 3:13 PM

Yarns are needed in Prince Albert and not those of the tall tale variety.

Eleanor George, the 86-year-old senior who spends much of the year knitting scarves and mittens for people in need has a need herself: yarn to knit with.

“If someone has any yarn to help this project please call me,” George said.

This year’s knitting and crocheting is done already and on Tuesday, George presented Councillor Charlene Miller with boxes of completed scarves to be dispersed.

George does not do all the work alone and said others help out quite a bit.

“This was a year round project to get that many made. My scarves take about five pounds each. A good friend of mine, Arlene Kennedy, is a great help again this year and sent over 35 scarves,” she said.

George herself mostly crocheted the other 150 scarves that will be dispersed by city councillors this year.

With her project now in its fifth year, George said that a lot of people have been given a scarf to keep their neck warm.

“There’s hundreds of them out there,” she said. “I do hope they find a needy person and will help keep them warm.”

On Friday she will travel to Saskatoon for the holiday and while she visits, she will have a bag of yarn and her crochet hooks and knitting needles with her, getting ready for next year.
