Mintos fall in back-to-back games against Contacts, Wildcats

SASKATOON/WARMAN, SK – The Prince Albert Mintos had a tough road trip this weekend falling to the Saskatoon Contacts on Saturday night 4-2, then again on Sunday 7-0 to the Warman Wildcats.

Things looked bright for the Mintos to start the set, with Abinet Klassen opening the scoring the opener against the Contacts midway through the first period. Zach Moore then tied it in the dying seconds of the period to make it one all after twenty.

The Mintos would lead after the second with Owen Nelson netting the lone marker in the period to put the Mintos up after two.

But things went south in the third for the Green and Gold when Saskatoon exploded for three goals in the period, courtesy of Moore, Rhett Ewen, and Rylan Hue. The deficit was too large for PA to overcome as the Contacts took it 4-2.

Jayden Kraus started in goal for the Mintos on Saturday where he made 30 saves in the loss.

Logan Edmonstone got the nod for Saskatoon and stopped 28 shots for the win and to help the Contacts improve to 15-9-0-2 on the year.

A bit of a different story on Sunday where almost every goal that was scored came in the third period.

The scoreboard showed zeros for the majority of the contest until there was two seconds left on the clock in the second. Deegan Wapass just barely beat the buzzer to put Warman up 1-0 after two periods of play.

That goal didn’t just open the floodgates for the Wildcats, it broke the dam. Warman hung six goals on the Mintos in the third period, which included goals from Wapass, Zane Normand, Tylan Henrikson, Dawson Gerwing, and two from Kazden Mathies. After the dust settled, the Wildcats took the dominant win on home ice, 7-0.

Brady Holtvogt made 25 saves in the loss for PA meanwhile Wildcats netminder Corben Schnurr stopped all 25 shots he faced to help Warman improve to 10-9-0-2 on the year,

After the weekend, the Mintos sit with a 12-11-0-1 record heading into the break.

The Green and Gold are back in action Jan. 7 when they visit the Moose Jaw Winmar Warriors.
