Broussie homicide case committed for trial

The woman accused of killing Doris Broussie will be tried by judge and jury at Court of King’s Bench in Prince Albert.

That was the outcome of Friday’s preliminary hearing at provincial court for Francine Ballantyne.

While initially charged with second-degree murder, it was decided, based on the evidence given, that a charge of manslaughter was more appropriate.

All the evidence discussed during the hearing is protected by a publication ban.

Ballantyne was 28 years old at the time of the incident in August 2021. Broussie, 40, was initially found at a business in the 3600 block of Second Ave. W.

Two days later she was declared deceased by medical staff at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon.

No trial dates have been set as of yet. A bail hearing will take place in the coming weeks.

The relationship between the two women is unclear at this time.

According to Broussie’s obituary, she was living in Prince Albert at the time of the violent incident but was formerly from Black Lake.
