Three people injured in series of nine shootings in Battlefords

Dec 14, 2022 | 1:41 PM

Investigations have begun into five shootings in North Battleford that started on the weekend, with one woman struck in the head and a man shot in the leg.

In the most recent shooting yesterday morning at 3 a.m., a woman went to the hospital with a gunshot wound to her head.

RCMP officers were already in the hospital for an unrelated call and started investigating right away.

Police say the victim was driving when she noticed a dark coloured vehicle – possibly a Jeep – started following her.

As she got close to 105th Street near a gas station, the vehicle pulled up on the driver’s side and an occupant started shooting at the victim’s vehicle.

Both the front and back windows on the driver’s side were shattered but the victim was able to drive home.

When she got there, a family member took her to the hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

Her vehicle was seized by police and officers are working on a detailed description of the suspect and the vehicle they were in.

The shootings started on Saturday, however, with the first report coming to police at 3:38 a.m. at a residence on Eighth Avenue with a window shot out.

At 4:15 a.m., a second report was made of a single shot being fired so officers began patrolling the community and found a victim in a vehicle with some minor damage to the back tailgate.

No injuries were reported in those incidents and no clear description of either a suspect or their vehicle was available.

On Sunday, at 2 a.m., another victim called 911 for a gunshot wound.

The call was disconnected but officers went to the home the call came from and found a man with a gunshot wound to his leg.

The victim is being treated in hospital and police say three unknown people dressed in black were seen leaving the house.

On Monday evening at 11:15 p.m., another person was reported injured by a gunshot.

The man had been walking along 110th Street and 11th Avenue in North Battleford when he was shot. He went into a nearby home for help and was treated by EMS with what are also described as serious but non life-threatening injures.

No suspects or vehicles were identified in the shooting.

Police do not know enough yet to say for sure whether the victims and suspects know each other or if the incidents are even related but based on preliminary information, investigators say they may be gang-related.

The Battlefords detachment is now investigating nine active cases of gunshots.

“In the aftermath of these incidents, Battlefords RCMP is working tirelessly to investigate all aspects of these incidents, including the events and interactions leading up to reports of the discharge of firearms,” Insp. Jesse Gilbert, Officer in Charge of the Battlefords RCMP, said. “Battlefords RCMP continues to conduct witness interviews and gather physical evidence to create an accurate picture of the motives behind these crimes and whether some of the victims were targeted. Residents in the community can expect to see an increased police presence as officers investigate these incidents and work to help maintain public safety.”

Battlefords RCMP is investigating all incidents with the assistance of the Battlefords RCMP Municipal General Investigation Section. Saskatchewan RCMP Forensic Identification Services has also been consulted.

Residents are being asked to report any information they might have immediately, and officers are looking for help identifying the suspects and their vehicles.

This is critical information that is required to help ensure the safety of residents in the community. Information can be reported to Battlefords RCMP by calling 306-446-1720. Information can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.saskcrimestoppers.com.
