Show cause hearing scheduled for accused in armed robbery

Dec 14, 2022 | 4:00 PM

The man charged following an attempted armed robbery in Nipawin will be back in Melfort Provincial Court on Monday.

Robert McKay, age 25, will have a show cause hearing, which means he will have to convince a judge he can be released from jail.

McKay, who is from Shoal Lake, is facing multiple charges, including robbery with a firearm, pointing a firearm, wearing a disguise with intent, possession of a weapon contrary to an order, having a restricted gun without a license, and failing to comply with a probation order.

The robbery attempt at the Nipawin Par A Mart Esso Convenience store last week was foiled when three staff members took on the robber, using a chair, a tackle, and a baseball bat.

They managed to pin the robber to the ground and hold him there until police arrived.

Video surveillance of the store shows a man walking into the store and pointing what was later revealed to be a loaded shotgun at the clerks.

The robber then tries to walk behind the till before being attacked by the staff members.
