Nipawin children get imaginative boost

Dec 6, 2022 | 4:04 PM

Pre-school children in Nipawin have a reason to check the mail all year long.

Thanks to local efforts, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library is sending young readers free books monthly.

It’s also thanks to efforts from local businesses, such as the Tim Horton’s Smile Cookie Campaign, said Lisa Vavra, Nipawin and area family resource coordinator.

“We were at Tim Horton’s nearly every morning decorating smile cookies and delivering,” said Vavra.

This year 8,206 cookies were sold resulting in the same number of dollars going into the program.

The Nipawin Kinsmen agreed to help the resource centre to create the service in Nipawin.

The Imagination Library is a children’s literacy effort by country singer Dolly Parton that targets ages newborn to age five.

They get one book per month per child in the mail but local sponsorship is needed to help pay for the books.

The program has been running for just over a year now. Each book costs $3.55 so a sponsor can pay for one child’s reading material for $42.60 per year.

Vavra said they have a goal of 100 children in the program annually so the Smile Cookie money will help keep the program going for some time.

“It will keep us going for a while which is very nice that we can fundraise and keep the program going,” she said.
