Wheaties ride second period outburst to edge Raiders

BRANDON, MB – The Brandon Wheat Kings barely squeaked by the Prince Albert Raiders on Friday night, winning 5-4 at Westoba Place.

Brandon can thank their second period efforts for the win where they scored three goals thanks to the works of Nate Danielson, Brett Hyland, and Rylen Roersma. Tagging along was Luke Shipley and Zakhar Polshako who added markers of their own in the first period. Nolan Ritchie, Calder Anderson, Quinn Mantei, and Anthony Wilson were the assist getters for Brandon in the game.

Hayden Pakkala, Harrison Lodewyk, Ryder Ritchie, and Keaton Sorensen each lit the lamp for the Raiders in the game while Sorensen, Niall Crocker, Owen Boucher, and Carson Latimer each potted assists.

Tikhon Chaika made 22 save in the loss where PA now falls to 10-14-2-0 on the campaign.

Carson Bjarnason stopped just 11 shots in the game to help the Wheat Kings improve to 9-15-2-0 on the year.

The Raiders got the party started early in the first when Pakkala found the back of the net. He took a feed from Crocker then buried his third of the year to put PA up six minutes in.

Not long after PA’s marker, Brandon would tie it back up, then take the lead. Shipley scored to pull the Wheaties back to even then just a few minutes after, Polshakov would score again for Brandon to make it a 2-1 game after the first period.

Things got worse in the second for PA when Brandon hung three goals on Chaika. Danielson, Hyland, and Roersma each scored for Brandon in the middle frame. It wasn’t all bad for the Raiders however, Lodewyk salvaged one goal where the score was now 5-2.

In an effort to inflict some life into the Raiders bench, Terrell Goldsmith dropped the mitts with Prince Albert born Matthew Henry. The two went blow for blow in an epic tilt that lasted about 45 seconds. In the end, the officials stepped in the break up the fight and both players were given five-minute majors for their efforts. Instead of heading to the box, Goldsmith went to the locker room for repairs after drawing blood during the fight.

With just three seconds to go in the period, all life was sucked out of the building when a Wheat Kings player crashed into the board.

Gabe Ludwig went shoulder to shoulder with Charlie Elick where Elick lost his balance and crashed into the side boards awkwardly, and at high speeds. Almost immediately, play was blown dead so that both teams’ medical staffs, and paramedics, could attend to the injured Brandon defender. After about a ten-minute stoppage in play, Elick was stretchered off the ice where he would not return to the game. No penalty was given to Ludwig as a result of the play. Before leaving the ice, Elick was moving and gave a thumbs up to the crowd.

Not long into the third and the Raiders started to chip away at the deficit. Just 43 seconds in, Ritchie scored his third of the year and three minutes after that Sorensen added another to make it 5-4 Wheat Kings early in the third.

The score would remain the same going into the dying minutes of the frame where PA pulled Chaika for the extra attacker but couldn’t convert as Brandon would outlast the Raiders comeback attempt with the 5-4 win.

The Raiders have a quick turnaround now as they’ll be in Winnipeg to take on the ICE in less than 24 hours.
