BUCKLAND FIRE AND RESCUE

Chief of Buckland Fire Department looking forward to next chapter

Nov 24, 2022 | 8:00 AM

After six years of leading Buckland Fire and Rescue, Garry Schrader said he’s looking to take a step back and let another fill his shoes.

The fire department is currently hiring for a new Fire Chief as Schrader wants to step aside from that role while staying with the department he has served for many years.

“I’ve been with the fire department for 25 years,” he said. “I’m getting up in age, I’m 66 now, and I think it’s time for somebody a little younger with new ideas to come in.”

He said he will still be a part of the department but won’t be as active as he is now as Fire Chief.

The volunteer fire department isn’t run by the RM but instead has its own Board of Directors. Schrader said he has enjoyed working with that board along with the other firefighters that have come through.

“I’ve worked with some great people. I’m still looking to work with the new Chief.”

He said whoever steps in as the Chief should be well-trained and understand the importance of leading a rural fire department.

“We do everything from grass fires to house fires to extrication. They have to have the experience like that, somebody coming out of the fire grounds, they have to know everything.”

Schrader reflected briefly on his 20-plus years in the department, adding departments like this one are very important to the rural communities they serve.

“All the firefighters are trained properly. People in Buckland should be happy with the Buckland Fire Department, they have the technology to do everything.”

The deadline to apply for the Fire Chief position in Buckland is Dec. 1.
