It’s been quite the season for the Prince Albert Wolf Pack and some local hockey teams have joined the fun.

The Prince Albert Special Olympics has been holding floor hockey games with their squad and many local teams over the past few weeks.

On Wednesday it was the Raiders’ turn to take on the Wolf Pack with a lot of bragging rights on the table.

The game was very evenly matched with the winning goal coming from Tanner Svenson on a penalty shot who whipped it past Raiders defenceman Eric Johnston.

“It’s good to get out in the community and play with these guys,” Johnston said. “It was a lot of fun.”

The final score was 10-9 in favour of the Wolf Pack with the team celebrating and rejoicing at the final buzzer.

Johnston said overall the team enjoyed this experience.

“Trying to keep it as close as possible, letting them have fun. It’s all about their experience and what we do with them. Took the loss but we’ll bounce back,” he joked.

The Raiders are not the only team that has faced the Special Olympics in floor hockey, in fact, some of the city’s best have come out over the past couple of months.

“The Mintos have come, the Bears have come”, said Wolf Pack coach Tyler Kowalski. “Overall, a great experience for our athletes.”

Another team that came out to Riverside School to face the Wolf Pack were the Venice House Bantam AA Pirates.

The teams faced off on Nov. 16 with the Wolf Pack prevailing 17-12.

Captain of the Pirates Owen Willie said the team enjoyed the night.

I was looking forward to it, to be honest. It was a blast; I like seeing those guys have a lot of fun,” Willie said.

Ty Semenchuk played in goal for the Pirates, and not only enjoyed the game but also the opportunity of doing something for the city.

“It’s good to get out there and model inclusiveness in the community and be leaders in the community,” he said. “It’s a lot of fun, it’s good to give back.”

The Wolf Pack will be busy the next few weeks as they get set to host a big Special Olympics tournament in the new year, the provincial floor hockey tournament.

“We play at Carlton Comprehensive High School where we welcome teams from all over the province. Saskatoon, Regina, Moose Jaw, Swift Current,” said Kowalski.

That tournament runs on Jan. 27. 28, and 29.
