Not guilty pleas entered in carjacking case

The man charged after a carjacking incident last month in the Lakeland area has entered not guilty pleas and will face trial early next year.

Cory Halkett, from La Ronge, was arrested Oct. 19, and faces a number of charges in relation to the incident that happened the day prior. The 32-year-old was charged with two counts of unlawful confinement, two counts of armed robbery, one count of carrying a weapon for a dangerous purpose; and one count of use of a firearm in the commission of an offence.

On Oct. 18, at approximately 4 p.m., Prince Albert RCMP received a report of a robbery. The investigation found a disabled vehicle was parked on the side of Highway 263.

Police say a man allegedly approached the vehicle, pointed a firearm at the occupants and forced them to stay inside it. The occupants were later able to escape and call for police. No injuries were reported.

The suspect was located at the scene but ran into the forest.

The next morning, RCMP received several complaints the suspect was on the Montreal Lake Cree Nation side of Little Red. Halkett was arrested without incident.

The trial at Prince Albert Provincial Court is scheduled for Feb. 9, 2023.
