Hard-nosed Herman named newest captain of Raiders

After trading Nolan Allan to the Seattle Thunderbirds, the Prince Albert Raiders were faced with the decision of who should succeed him as team captain. Fortunately, they had a player with all the qualifications for leadership right there, ready and waiting.

The team announced this afternoon that forward Evan Herman, who had been serving as an assistant captain, will now be the head of the team’s official leadership group. Herman was an assistant captain last season as well.

In a special video message, one of last season’s captains Kaiden Guhle came up on the jumbotron at the Art Hauser Centre during the Raiders’ practice to announce the news. Herman and Guhle had played together in parts of four seasons.

Herman, a 2002-born forward and native of The Pas, Manitoba, first joined the Raiders in 2019, getting into some action with the eventual WHL Champions in 2018-19. The next season, he made the leap to the Raiders full-time, posting nine goals and 22 points in 59 games.

Last season was Herman’s most productive in the WHL, as he scored 28 goals to lead the team while playing in all 68 games. He has now played in 167 career games in the WHL, all of them with the Raiders.

So far this season, Herman has posted nine points in 17 games and continued his hard work on both the power play and penalty kill. Always willing to finish a check, block a shot, or stick up for his teammates, he, as Guhle put it in his video message, “is a perfect example of what a Raider is.”

The Raiders’ next action, which could be Herman’s first game as captain as he’s just about ready to return from injury, is Saturday night against the Medicine Hat Tigers. The game begins at 7:00 at the Art Hauser Centre.
