Small town Curling club hopes community will come together for fundraising campaign

It’s a small-town rink with a lot of heart and a bright future, and its members are making sure it stays that way.

Recently, the Birch Hills Curling Club upgraded its ice plant at the rink, which has set them back roughly $86,000.

The club is now looking to the community for support.

“It was really important; it was an easy decision for us to make even though it put us in debt to put the plant in because it ensures the future of our rink,” said club president Shelley Carriere.

On top of the community donations, the club is also planning different fundraising events including suppers, and hoping to raise money in upcoming Bonspiels.

Carriere said the rink is very important to the town and they’ve seen more people take up Curling in recent years.

“We have an incredibly successful Curling rink,” she said. “It’s community-based; we have a lot of people that come out to watch. Our two-person league last year had 18 teams and we only took 16, which is really unheard of for small town Curling.”

She also pointed to the annual Town vs Country Bonspiel, where residents of the town face off against teams from the rural area, as one of the more unique events the Curling club hosts. That tournament is set to go on Dec. 9 and 10.

Anyone interested in donating to the Curling club is asked to contact the Birch Hills Curling Club.
