The hometown team took it all this past weekend at the 2nd Annual Ron Gunville Memorial Hockey Tournament.

The P.A. 18 AA Vulcans won the tournament after beating the Indigenous Sports Academy (ISA) 4-1 with Keethan Isbister netting two goals. Keestin Danielson and Liam Flett had the other goals for the Vulcans.

This year’s tournament featured the Vulcans, the ISA Eagles, the Humboldt AA Broncos, Weyburn Wings, Northeast Wolfpack, Saskatoon Sabercats and the Martensville Marauders.

This was also the first year the Ron Gunville Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 was awarded. The first-ever recipient was Ben Lefevre, an alumnus of the Vulcans who is currently studying engineering at the University of Saskatchewan.

The Vulcans first game was a big 7-0 win over the Broncos where Colin Paulhaus scored two goals and one assist with Isbister netting a goal and assist.

That game was followed by another 7-0 win, this time against the Wolfpack. Isbister would register another two goals and an assist. That win vaulted the team to the semi-finals where they faced Martensville.

The team would continue its offensive onslaught, scoring six goals against the Marauders winning the semi-final 6-2. Matthew Cudmore would score a hat trick in that game.

In the final game, Isbister scored twice while Liam Flett and Keestin Danielson had a goal each to propel the Vulcans to a 4-1 victory and the tournament championship.

Isbister, one of the team’s alternate captains explained what it felt like to not only win the event but to do so on home ice.

“I thought we gelled all weekend. I thought we played excellent and continued to learn and grow as a team. It was one of the milestones to our next goal which is winning the (league) championship.”

Isbister added the tournament means a lot to the Gunville family and to the hockey community at large in Prince Albert.
