Raiders take down Oil Kings in Remembrance Day contest

Nov 11, 2022 | 10:41 PM

PRINCE ALBERT, SK – The Prince Albert Raiders got the job done on Friday night, defeating the Edmonton Oil Kings 4-2 at the Art Hauser Centre.

The loss comes 48 hours after falling to the Lethbridge Hurricanes on the road.

“We had a great start, 12 seconds in we get a goal,” said Raiders head coach Jeff Truitt. “We were in command for quite a bit, we had a penalty shot (which) could have given us more distance but it didn’t and they battled back. I thought at certain times in the third period that our composure needed to be a little bit better rather than (giving up) turnovers. But I thought that we played hard along the walls tonight. I thought that we made some good plays at times on our walls, getting blue lines, getting pucks out, getting puck in. (We) played a pretty good structure here tonight, I’m happy with the effort.”

Carson Latimer had a point on all three goals, scoring one and assisting on the other two. Harrison Lodewyk and Landon Kosior were the other goal-scorers for the Raiders while Nolan Allan and Hayden Pakkala each had a helper.

Carter Kowalyk and Mason Finley each lit the lamp in the contest while Luca Hauf, Marshall Finnie, and Jaxsen Wiebe collected assists.

Tikhon Chaika stood tall for the Raiders making 30 saves to help the Raiders improve to 6-12-2-0 on the campaign.

Kolby Hay stopped 23 shots from PA in the loss where Edmonton now falls to 2-15-1-0 on the year.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE

The game started off with a short ceremony for Remembrance Day where a duo of pipers played Amazing Grace which was followed by the playing of The Last Post and moment of silence. O’ Canada was played to wrap-up the ceremony. The Raiders were also wearing special jerseys in honour of Canadian soldiers.

Following the pre-game events, the Raiders wasted no time getting on the board, scoring just 12 seconds in.

Latimer got the puck off the draw where he quickly chipped the puck into the Oil Kings end. He brought the puck from the corner and continued with it until the back of the net. From there, he dumped the puck in front where Lodewyk fired it into the net to put PA up early.

Midway through the frame and tempers started to flare where Tyrell Goldsmith and Marshall Finnie decided to settle some differences and duke it out. Goldsmith landed haymaker after haymaker on Finnie and took him down after ten seconds. Both players were each given five-minute penalties for fighting.

Moments later and the Raiders doubled up Edmonton. Latimer spotted Allan on the blueline who then connected with Kosior on the powerplay to make 2-0.

Fast-forward to the early minutes of the second and the home team scored again. Pakkala flipped a pass through the Oil Kings defense and the puck landed on the tape of Latimer who simply collected the puck and chipped it past Hay to triple PA’s lead.

Edmonton did get one back later in the frame however. Hauf’s initial shot was stopped by Chaika, but Kowalyk was there to put away the rebound to net his first of the year and to make it 3-1 going into the third.

Less than six minutes into the third and the Oil Kings got another. Finley ripped a shot that beat Chaika up high where Edmonton made it a one-goal game.

Sorensen added an empty-netter late in the game to seal the 4-2 win for the Raiders.

The Green and Gold are back on the road for their next contest where they’re off to Moose Jaw for a date with the Warriors on Tuesday night.
