Grade Nine students from Carlton Comprehensive School have a display at the South Hill Mall that combines some word skills with an important message for Canadians.

Mackenzie Reeder, age 14, said she enjoyed doing a black-out poetry project and the fact that it has meaning.

“We had to circle 10 words of a poem and we had to make our own poem out of those 10 words, and then you had to draw something out of Remembrance Day. A lot of people did a cross, and then a poppy, and then a soldier’s hat,” she said.

Those were combined to make a unique Remembrance Poem, all of which are displayed along the walls of the mall across from Service Canada.

“It’s important because you are remembering the soldiers that have passed in the war. Then you do some prayers,” said Mackenzie.

Melanie Mirasty, the Grade Nine visual arts teacher at Carlton who organized the poetry, explained that the grade is new to high school but being willing to have a public airing of their work takes some courage.

“The project was to create something special for Remembrance Day and we used the medium of black-out poetry to create images and poems that reflect on this very special day,” said Mirasty. “I’m just incredibly proud of my students for being able to create something that commemorates this.”

She commented on the ability of the students to do the work and honour the legacy of Remembrance Day.

“I think just a readiness that the students have to be able to take on this project and to be able to have the confidence in Grade 9 for it to be shown in public,” she said.
