Raiders’ Guard named to Canada’s 2023 World Junior coaching staff

Nov 9, 2022 | 1:38 PM

Prince Albert Raiders goaltending coach Kelly Guard has been selected to help coach Team Canada at the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship.

This isn’t his first time coaching on the international stage, having been selected to coach with Team Canada at the 2022 U17 Hlinka Gretzky Cup earlier this year, where he helped lead Canada to a gold medal.

Guard is one of three coaches in the WHL to be selected to help man Team Canada at the World Juniors. Joining him from the WHL Everett Silvertips head coach Dennis Williams and Lethbridge Hurricanes head coach Brent Kisio. Williams was selected to be the head coach for Canada at the tournament while Kisio will be an assistant coach.

Director of Player Personnel Alan Millar helped pick the coaching staff for Canada where he thinks he has all the right pieces to win a gold medal.

“We are thrilled to welcome back Dennis and James Boyd following a gold medal at the 2022 World Juniors to help bring momentum and consistency from our success in the summer,” said Millar. “We are also excited to welcome Stéphane, Brent, Alan, Kelly, and James Emery, as each coach brings a wealth of experience and success from the Canadian Hockey League and international levels. We believe we have assembled a world-class coaching staff that will play a large part in defending our gold medal on the East Coast starting next month.”

The tournament gets underway on Dec. 26 and will take place in Halifax, NS, and Moncton, NB.
