Raiders collect two points with late win against Tigers

Nov 8, 2022 | 11:17 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Hayden Pakkala scored the game-winning goal on Tuesday night, helping the Prince Albert Raiders down the Medicine Hat Tigers 3-1 at Co-op Place.

The win ends a two-game skid for the Raiders after falling 3-2 to the Moose Jaw Warriors on Friday and 4-2 versus the Everett Silvertips on Saturday.

Sloan Stanick headlined the scoresheet on Tuesday, netting himself a goal and two assists. Niall Crocker didn’t fall too far behind with two helpers of his own, while Hayden Pakkala and Carson Latimer were the other goal getters for the green and gold. Owen Boucher and Keaton Sorensen also both tallied an assist.

Tyler MacKenzie was the lone goal scorer for the Tigers, while Oasiz Wiesblatt and Andrew Basha both potted assists.

Tikhon Chaika stood tall between the pipes, stopping 33 shots to help the Raiders improve to 5-11-2-0 on the campaign.

Beckett Langkow managed 25 saves in the loss where Medicine Hat now falls to 4-9-3-0 on the year.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE

Neither team could find the back of the net in the opening period but not without some drama beforehand. The Tigers managed to put the puck past Chaika but almost immediately after they scored, the ref called the goal back due to a heavy case of goalie interference.

Believe it or not, a similar bit of drama occurred in the second but this time it was against the Raiders.

Zach Wilson’s initial shot was blocked by a defender and was shot into the air. Terrell Goldsmith managed to bat the puck off the crossbar and in, but like the last goal, the ref waived it off. After the goal, the officials and linesmen discussed the play and together they decided it was a good goal. The ref then got on the phone with the review booth where they talked for over five minutes. A long while later, the official signaled no goal where it remained that way going into the third.

A scary moment to begin the final period after a collision that sent Evan Herman to the locker room. Kurtis Smythe sent Herman into the boards very awkwardly where the Raiders alternate captain was slow to get up. Thankfully, he was able to exit the game under his own power but didn’t not return.

Just a few moments later, the ice was finally broken. MacKenzie tipped in a pass from Wiesblatt while on the powerplay to put Medicine Hat up with 15 minutes to go.

Just under a minute later and the Raiders tied it back up. Stanick picked up a bouncing puck at centre ice that somehow found its way through the Tigers defense. He used his speed to cut in and slip the puck five-hole to pull PA back to even.

Prince Albert took the lead with less than five minutes to go. Stanick gave the puck to Latimer in tight who then backhanded to Pakkala who made no mistake to put the Raiders up 2-1.

Latimer added an empty-netter to seal the deal and give PA the 3-1 win.

The Raiders play game two of their Southern Alberta road-trip tomorrow night where they’ll take on the Lethbridge Hurricanes from the Enmax Centre. Puck drop is 8pm CST.
