‘Surreal’: Longtime Raiders fan Friedt-Mohr returns to Hauser to face childhood team

There may have been some slightly conflicted fans at the Art Hauser Centre on Tuesday, November 1 when the Prince Albert Raiders hosted the Tri-City Americans. On the one hand, the Raiders were their hometown team. On the other hand, the hometown boy was wearing the Americans’ colours.

Prince Albert native Chase Friedt-Mohr made his return to the Art Hauser Centre last night, the arena that was practically his home away from home as a child. Whether it was cheering for the Raiders or playing with the Prince Albert Mintos AAA team for two seasons, he was always around the rink.

“It feels great being back here now as a visitor,” Friedt-Mohr said. “Spending so many years with the Mintos as the home team, it’s kind of surreal to play against your childhood team. I’m very pumped to play here again.”

Friends and family members of Friedt-Mohr piled into the arena to cheer him on, though Friedt-Mohr joked he would understand if some of them were pulling for the Raiders. A lot of his friends from his time with the Mintos are still around, though many have moved on to higher levels of hockey as he did.

“It was some of the best couple of years of hockey of my life,” Friedt-Mohr said. “Growing with that team and the great group of guys we had, now lots of them in the Western Hockey League, my time here with the Mintos was excellent.”

Friedt-Mohr played at the Art Hauser Centre last season as a member of the Edmonton Oil Kings, an experience he remembers fondly, but that was part of a tumultuous year for him in which he played for four different teams in three different leagues. Now it appears he’s finding a home in the Tri-City.

“It’s a great place to play hockey,” Friedt-Mohr said. “I’m getting an opportunity here and I’m running with it and I’m just super happy to be here. Great coaching staff, I’m trusting the process here.”

It’s been a tough run for the Americans, who missed the playoffs last season, but led by some talented, big-bodied young players they’re pushing back to the playoffs now. The dogfight in the standings has been one Friedt-Mohr has enjoyed so far.

“We’re for sure striding towards a playoff team, I think we have that in this locker room,” Friedt-Mohr said. “We’re hard-working, we try to wear down opponents. That’s kind of our game; we wear down opponents down low.”

The Americans sit sixth in the Western Conference after their 5-4 loss to the Raiders last night.
