Raiders Overtime Loss

Raiders salvage single point in comeback effort

Oct 8, 2022 | 9:16 AM

In a game that featured no shortage of scoring, the Prince Albert Raiders had just enough touch around the net to propel the game into extra time. Unfortunately, they didn’t have enough left in the tank for the one final sprint.

Sloan Stanick scored twice and Keaton Sorenson and Carson Latimer added single goals as the Raiders fell 5-4 to the Swift Current Broncos. Max Hildebrand was tagged with the loss after giving up five goals on 27 shots.

Stanick started the scoring on a power play in the first period, as he tried to fire the puck back to Landon Kosior at the left side of the net. Instead, he bounced it in off the stick of defenseman Josh Fluker.

The Broncos got their answer at even strength when Clarke Caswell outreached Hildebrand with a shot to the far post following the rebound of a shot by Josh Davies. Again, the Raiders power play provided the answer, however, as just four seconds into their next one, Even Herman went forward off the draw to feed Latimer, who lifted it home for his second in as many games.

Power plays would become an unfortunate theme of the night from there for the Raiders, as Swift Current’s power play rattled off three straight goals on three straight opportunities. Raphael Pelletier got the first to tie the score in the first period, then Josh Filmon and Connor Hvidston added one more each in the second to make it 4-2 Broncos.

Late in the second, the Raiders got some badly needed momentum as Stanick worked a give-and-go with Ryder Ritchie, snapping home his second of the contest from the top of the left circle to tie the game.

Back and forth the teams battled in the third, with the Broncos having 57 seconds of 5-on-3 time and the Raiders killing it all off. With 1:46 to go, Stanick fought his way toward the goal and fed it to a wide-open Sorenson at the top of the crease, who just managed to slip it past Gage Alexander to tie the game.

The Raiders very nearly didn’t get to overtime, as a late penalty gave the Broncos another power play opportunity, which carried into the extra frame. After that power play expired, the game never returned to four-on-four as, with 52.1 seconds to go, Kayden Sadhra-Kang drove the net and bounced in a pass from Grayson Burzynski to end the night.

A quick turnaround for the Raiders now as they travel to Lethbridge to face the Hurricanes. That game goes at 7:00 on 900 CKBI.
