Pulp mill reopening plan continues, company submits environmental impact statement

A major step toward restarting Prince Albert’s decommissioned pulp mill happened Monday with the company submitting its environmental impact statement (EIS) to the province.

According to a release from Paper Excellence, the Prince Albert Pulp mill delivered the environmental statement to the province’s Ministry of Environment as part of its environmental permitting process.

The pulp mill has been dormant since its closure in 2006.

“Submitting our environmental impact statement is a critical step forward for the project,” Carlo Dal Monte, the project operations director of the mill’s restart said. “We look forward to the Ministry of Environment’s thorough and timely review of our EIS.”

Paper Excellence recently commissioned a public opinion poll which found that 93 per cent of Saskatchewan residents are in favour of restarting the pulp mill.

“We are very encouraged by the enthusiasm that we have encountered in the process up to this point, and we were happy to see that confirmed in recent polling,” Dal Monte said.

While this is an important step for the mill’s reopening, it still remains subject to market conditions and various permitting approvals.
