Sep 28, 2022 | 5:00 PM

The latest crime statistics provided by the Prince Albert Police Service show a large increase in the number of assaults and sexual violations in the city.

During the month of August, there were 137 reported assaults. This compared to 64 for the same month last year.

Year-to-date (period ending Aug. 31), there have been 869 assaults, which represents a 73 per cent increase from last year

The number of sexual violations have nearly doubled year-over-year, from eight in August, 2020, to 16 last month. Year-to-date there have been 101.

Other areas of concern are break and enters related to residential and non-residential properties. There were 30 reported incidents last month involving residential and 21 for non-residential.

This was up from up 13 and 11 respectively.

Year-to-date there were 320 vehicle thefts, with 47 happening in August.

On the flip side, there are some positive trends. Break and enters to residential outbuildings (garages and sheds) have decreased 50 per cent in the last year; and there was an 18 per cent drop when comparing August of last year to this past August.

Traffic violations dropped nearly 30 per cent.

Normally the crime statistics are presented and discussed each month during the city’s board of police commissioners meeting, but there has not been a meeting since June 22.

The next scheduled meeting is on Oct. 18.
