Prince Albert to host major boxing tournament

Editor’s note: The Saskatchewan Silver Gloves Boxing Championships has been cancelled due to a shortage of officials. A new date has not been announced.

For the first time ever, Prince Albert is hosting a Silver Gloves tournament.

The event next month at the Exhibition Centre will feature fighters from across Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. Braddock Koch, head coach at the Red Wolf Boxing Club, told paNOW he’s very excited to host.

“We’re a small club and we are just starting so we’re stoked about it,” he said.

In addition to a tournament-style format for boxers who have between five and 10 bouts, the event will also include some additional open bouts featuring local boxers Cole Ahenakew and Easton Pelletier-Armitage.

The winners in each weight category receive a silver gloves champion trophy, and there are additional trophies for best overall male and female.

“This is our first tournament, so it’s a little nerve-racking but we’ll get there,” Koch said.

The event is scheduled for Oct. 8th, and the bouts start at 7 p.m. Depending on how many boxers register, the tournament may spill over to the 9th, as well.

Tickers are $25 and are on sale now at the Exhibition Centre or through the Red Wolf Boxing Club.
