Sask. couple driving – and floating – through summer in Amphicar

Churchbridge’s Stan Brenner has a sweet ride.

He and his wife Karla Sastaunik own one of the very few Amphicars still in existence. It drives on land and in the water.

Just 3,878 of the cars were made, and Brenner has a 1964 Amphicar Model 770.

“It’s supposed to do 70 miles an hour on land and seven miles an hour in the water,” he said.

“It’s an antique. I would never take it that fast on the road, of course, because I don’t want to hurt it at all. In the water, I’m guessing it might do seven miles an hour.”

He said when people first see him driving it into the water, they usually think he’s crazy.

“When I’m going in, they’re almost, ‘What are you doing? Like, what the heck’s going on here?’ And then they’re, ‘Oh my God, that thing goes in the water! It’s unbelievable! That is so cool!’” Brenner said.

Owning the car has been a life-long dream of his, Brenner said.

“I went for a ride when I was about five to seven years old in Kenosee Lake, and I always said I wanted one of these,” he said.

That dream came true four years ago.

“The ride that I got was from the previous owner of the car I have now,” he said.
