Team Sask chasing gold at Canada Summer Games

Team Sask has 16 medals at the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games so far.

Heading into the final weekend of competition, athletes have claimed nine silver and eight bronze medals, but are still looking for a first place finish.

After a couple of busy days on the track, Team Sask athletics had a training day and returned to competition on Friday.

Storm Zablocki of Prince Albert made his first Canada Games appearance. He placed eighth in the men’s 100m race and will also participate in the 4x100m relay.

Prince Albert’s Shelaine Pritchard will continue with the remainder of her heptathlon events on Saturday, including long jump, javelin and 800m.

Nipawin’s Kira Comfort will be looking to qualify in the women’s discus event.

Meadow Lake’s Avery Pearson placed sixth in the women’s 400m final and has the 800m and 4x400m relay medal heats scheduled for Saturday.

In men’s basketball, Team Sask placed eighth in the final standings. Luke Huddleston, a shooting guard from Prince Albert was a member of the team.

Marti Burechailo of Wakaw and Prince Albert’s Brooklyn Vancoughnett were part of the female Box Lacrosse team that placed eighth.

Matthew Cudmore, Brayden Rieger and Aidan Horn of Prince Albert, along with Koltin Fyrk who is from Birch Hills, are part of the Box Lacrosse team heading into quarter final action Friday.

Hudson Bay’s Elizabeth Marshall and Prince Albert’s Dori Miller finished seventh with their Rugby Sevens team.

Prince Albert’s Krystle Shewchuk will spend her weekend at the Niagara on the Lake Sailing Club. She sits third in the 2.4m Para Mix event.

In men’s softball action, Team Sask had a tough day Thursday losing both games played. In the afternoon, they lost to Team Nova Scotia 7-6 and 6-1 to Team Ontario last night. Ryan Bicknell and Troy Premack, both from P.A., and Delisle’s Oakley Durham and Brant Wiebe were set to play the team from Newfoundland and Labrador Friday afternoon.

On the women’s side, Erin Kirkland of Tisdale, Kiana Mullner from Prince Albert, and Olivia Woytiuk from Shell Lake finished fourth.

Angel Besskkaystare of Wollaston Lake was in Niagara as part of the women’s wrestling team which placed fourth. She lost in the bronze medal match in the Individual up to 69kg female category. Prince Albert’s Dononvan Neudorf took home a silver medal in the Individual up to 60 kg male final.

Although they didn’t medal, Sam Fisher of Humboldt and Tate Zimmermann, originally from Englefeld, both competed in several swimming events as part of the Special Olympics program.

In volleyball action, both teams played New Brunswick Thursday and were on the winning side. The women’s team, which includes Taryn Hanna (Battlefords) and Seanna Trumier (Prince Albert) won 3-1. The men’s team won 3-0. Noah Opseth (Birch Hills), Ethan Smith (Prince Albert), Skyler Varga (Muenster) and Brock Tomyn (Prince Albert) made the Team Sask roster and are scheduled to play teams from Alberta and Ontario on Saturday.
