‘I truly hope they can’t sleep at night’: grieving mother calls for answers on anniversary of daughter’s disappearance

Nearly a year has passed since Crystal Castle was last seen in Prince Albert.

Two weeks later, on Aug. 25, 2021, the remains of the 28-year-old would be found west of St. Louis. Castle’s mother, Marci Marner, revealed to paNOW she had no new information up until Monday when she spoke with the lead investigator.

“[The case] is very much active. They’re still serving warrants even just in the last few days,” she said, adding though police would not disclose whether those warrants were related to property, people, or both.

“They just really hope that people discussing it again will kind of bring that last little bit of information that they need.”

At the time of her disappearance, Crystal Castle had been living in Prince Albert for just over a year. Working as a carpenter, she enjoyed doing outdoor activities, music and hanging out with friends. Family members have previously indicated she gave no signs of being in any sort of trouble.

Crystal was ultimately last seen in a red Dodge Dakota truck in Prince Albert by the Circle K convenience store on 28th Street East. On the anniversary of the disappearance, a walk will be held in Regina. It is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. at Scott Collegiate.

Marner said she wants the walk to be part memorial and part celebration.

“Crystal wouldn’t have wanted everybody to be sad. She would rather everybody jack-assing around. That’s her, she was always into shenanigans and she was the oldest of all her 13 siblings so she was always getting them into trouble,” she said.

Soon after Castle’s death, a GoFundMe was launched and raised enough money to cover the funeral expenses. As for Marci and her husband, they would buy an RV and drive out to Nova Scotia, along with two of Crystal’s sisters, Crystal’s dog, Luna, and four cats. The family would stay there for four months.

“It impacted me so much that I legitimately didn’t feel safe but couldn’t put that into words until months later,” Marner explained.

Now looking back on the past year, she described feeling numb until February.

“And then I got angry and I’ve been stuck in angry right up until I spoke with the homicide detective a couple days ago just because I didnt feel like anything was happening,” she said.

Anyone with information on Castle’s death can contact their local RCMP detachment by calling 310-RCMP.

“There are multiple people out there that know what happened and I truly hope they can’t sleep at night and the guilt absolutely eats them alive,” Marner said.

Marner also noted those with information have the option to come forward in person or anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

“We don’t care how the information comes out about but let it off yours shoulders. Let her family have closure,” she said.
