Legion monuments and public art on council agenda

Aug 8, 2022 | 8:00 AM

City council will have a few decisions to make at Monday’s meeting, including the approval of two projects in the works for some months.

Administration is recommending council approve the request by the Legion to play several monuments in Memorial Square next to City Hall.

The Legion wants to acknowledge the sacrifice of veterans from conflicts including Afghanistan, Korea and the work of Peacekeepers.

Another decision on the agenda is a proposed agreement for a piece of public art.

Mary Longman, an Indigenous artist from the Gordon First Nation could be hired to create a “major” piece of public art. A public working group has met with Longman and discussed design concepts.

Council was asked to make modifications to an existing agreement that had a changed timeline and payment schedule.

Other items include a development permit for a new hotel in The Yard district, approving a child care centre and signage for the Grand Slam Ball Park rebuild.

Council meets at 2:00 pm in City Hall on Monday.
