Back to Batoche back in person for the 50th celebration

After a two-year hiatus from hosting people, Back to Batoche is ready to roll for its first in-person festival since 2019.

The festival has been held annually since 1970 — including going virtual in 2020 and 2021 — providing the opportunity to preserve and promote Métis culture through dancing, storytelling, food, sports, and much more.

Among some of the events, there will be a slo-pitch tournament, chuckwagon races, children’s activities, and live music and dancing, with Nathan Cunningham, Ryan Keplin, Just The Boyz, and Terri-Ann Strongarm all set to perform this weekend along with a list of other notable talents.

Back to Batoche is a family-friendly event and the age of participants varies from new parents and Elders to newborns and teens. This annual celebration represents a movement toward reconciliation as approximately 10,000 people of both Metis and non-Metis descent gather over the course of the festival to share the celebration of Metis history, culture, and language.

Festivities are set to begin on Thursday at 8:00 a.m at the Batoche historical site just 20 minutes outside Rosthern and will go on until Sunday afternoon.
