P.A. track star stays golden at U20 Nationals

A Prince Albert woman brought home some hardware after winning the heptathlon at the Bell Canadian U20-Senior-Para Track & Field Championships.

The event was held two weeks ago in Langley, B.C. with Shelaine Pritchard finishing above the rest, winning three of the seven events.

The recent St.Mary’s graduate finished atop the podium in the 200 metres (25.88 sec.), high jump (1.63m), and javelin throw (31.09m).

She also landed a podium finish in the 100 metres hurdles (2nd – 15.13 sec.), long jump (2nd – 5.14m), and shot put (3rd – 9.52m).

This wasn’t her first rodeo on the national stage either, having won the U16 heptathlon in 2019. But according to Pritchard, this win felt different than the rest.

“I feel like it was such a different experience compared to the other meets that I’ve competed at. I worked pretty hard to achieve something like that and so it felt like all the hard work that I’ve done really paid off to get a title like that.”

Pritchard finished the heptathlon with a total of 4,591 points, which was enough to get her the gold along with the third-best heptathlon score in U20 Canadian woman’s track and field this year.

She’s currently committed to the University of Regina where she is on an academic and track scholarship.
