After many decades of volunteering at seniors home, P.A. woman receives national award

A Prince Albert woman is receiving a national award for her years of volunteer work at a local seniors home.

Molly Cowie received a plaque on Thursday from Abbeyfield Canada, a non-profit that oversees 19 centres across Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario, for the roughly 26 years she’s spent volunteering for P.A.’s society.

She told paNOW the main reason she keeps coming back to help is the people who call the building home.

“I’ve gotten to know all the residents and when I hear the residents saying, for example, that they’re going home (to Abbeyfield) …that’s what it’s all about.”

Her claiming she knows the residents can actually be considered an understatement. With help from her son, Cowie created a history book that features at least one page about every single person to call P.A.’s Abbeyfield House home since it was created back in 2001.

“We have their story, their history, and they like to read each other’s history,” she said. “I think it’s been my biggest venture as it’s continuing.”

This project has also caught the attention of the national organization as they’ve reportedly reached out to their other locations to see if they can do something similar.

Meanwhile, her love for the residents is also reciprocated.

During the plaque presentation, resident Warren Jahm spoke up to congratulate and thank her for the work she’s done.

He had nothing but nice things to say when talking about her to paNOW.

“She’s an amazing person, so kind, and so involved with Abbeyfield,” added Jahm.

Cowie was one of two volunteers to be given the plaque, called the Robert McMullan Award for Excellence and Outstanding Service, this year.

This isn’t her first award as she was recognized as P.A.’s citizen of the year back in 2004 and also received provincial recognition for her work back in 2005.
