Local martial artist looks to popularize sport in Prince Albert

Jun 29, 2022 | 2:39 PM

A Prince Albert man from North Wake Martial Arts is on the road to go pro and hopes to inspire others to get into the sport.

Brazilian jujitsu artist and kickboxer Kulbir Singh is looking to popularize martial arts in Prince Albert and encourages others to give it a try. According to Singh, the sport is not just good for you physically.

“Everyone should try supreme martial arts for their mental and physical health.”

Singh moved from India to Prince Albert in 2017 and said he had a tough start to life in Canada as he worked as a cab driver in the city. He mentioned that one night while driving his cab, he was a victim of an attempted stabbing. So to help protect himself, he decided to learn Brazilian jujitsu and how to kickboxing.

Since then, Singh said he started competing in tournaments. He won two gold medals this past weekend in Saskatoon and doesn’t plan on stopping there.

“I want to become an MMA fighter so I’m training hard every day. We have a professional MMA fighter in the gym, Ryan Rohovich, who has helped me a lot with my training.”

Singh added that martial arts are a fun way to stay fit and healthy, and he wants to encourage others to give it a shot.

“I want to send a message to our community to join martial arts so they can train with lots of people that will take away the misunderstandings among our communities and will create a peaceful environment.”
