The story of a Prince Albert doctor is now the centrepiece of a new book, chronicling the tales of Indo-Canadians making their mark on the community.

The volume “The Jewels of India” was created to mark the 75th anniversary of India’s Independence. A series of books has been created highlighting over 70 people who immigrated from India and made a major impact in their country.

Dr. Lalita Malhotra is now one of those stories and was presented with the first copies of the new book during a ceremony at City Hall.

“I feel very humbled and honoured,” said Malhotra. “Maneesh Media has been working very hard the past year and a half. I’m very touched actually.”

The compilation was published by Maneesh Media, one of the leading publishers in India, founded in 1999 in Jaipur. Since then, it has grown to several offices internationally, including one in Brampton, ON. The objective of the publisher is to tell untold stories of successes following struggles.

Siddharth Kumawat, Director of Overseas for Maneesh Media said the book was written during the height of the pandemic which only added to the story they were telling.

“We are certainly happy this book is out. What we realized working with the families is the essence of the family values, the unity has been more realized during this time.”

“They picked up the cream of the crop from different parts of Canada and concise it, for what their journeys have been since they arrived in Canada,” added Malhotra.

The volume that Malhotra is featured in is just the first volume, telling the stories of Indo-Canadians 50 and older. Maneesh Media is working on a second volume for those under the age of 50.

“Their stories are completely different but the lesson we can take from each one is hard work and perseverance always pays off,” Kumawat said. “These are the 75 lessons, even though they’re taken from the Indo-Canadian society, they’re very much applicable to the broader society.”

In attendance for the book presentation were Mayor Greg Dionne and Chief of Prince Albert Police John Bergen, who said he was honoured to be invited to the event.

“Seeing what the doctor has done for the community over the last 46 years is absolutely incredible,” he said. “We’ve seen her give life and medical support to so many. To help cope with addictions, help build families and help strengthen families, that all support a healthy community. Although the doctor is quite humble and would say that the community has given her great things, she has also given the community great things.”

The book is available for order online through the Maneesh Media website.

Kumawat added complimentary copies of the book will also be sent to libraries, universities, and government offices.
