Saskatchewan man’s podcast helping people struggling with substance abuse and recovery

Jun 22, 2022 | 3:00 PM

A Saskatchewan man is sharing his story of substance abuse and recovery in hopes of helping others in similar situations.

Daniel Hearn, who goes by the online name Daniel Unmanageable, has been hosting the podcast ‘Hard Knox Talks’ out of Saskatoon since February 2021.

The idea really came out of nowhere, as he first thought of it while at school. He told paNOW his friends were really the ones who pushed him into doing it.

“I put it on Facebook, ‘should I do this,’ and a bunch of my friends were like ‘yah, do it, I’ll come on, I’ll be a guest,’ so I did it.”

Hearn has been clean for over five years.

Along with sharing stories from his past, the podcast also features others who are in different stages of their recovery.

For Hearn, talking about his struggles has helped him and he notices that it does the same for many of his guests.

“That has brought them healing and their family healing, to be able to sit and listen to the whole story.”

He’s officially been working on the podcast full-time since January 2022. It’s grown immensely since he first started it as it’s been able to reach over three million people on Facebook over the past 28 days with 1.3 million engaging in his posts.

Hearn claims he gets at least one listener a week personally messaging him to thank him for helping them with their recovery. He also noted he’s heard from people who work in the substance abuse field who’ve expressed support for his talk show.

“I definitely feel like I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing right now.”

Meanwhile, Hearn is set to host fellow podcaster and advocate Garth Mullins later this month.

Mullins hosts ‘Crackdown’ which, according to his website, ‘tells the story of drug user activism in the face of hostility and neglect.’

The two will be discussing a methadose switch in Saskatchewan and the potential consequences it could have.

“When they did the same switch in British Columbia in 2014 it had, some might say, catastrophic consequences,” added Hearn. The methadose that they transitioned to, in my opinion, and many’s opinion, was substandard.”

The episode will air on Facebook and YouTube on June 30 at 11:45 a.m CST.
