Hockey Season Underway

Prince Albert minor hockey registration gets underway

Jun 21, 2022 | 1:00 PM

Although the summer season is in full swing, Prince Albert Minor Hockey got the ball rolling on the 2022-23 season.

Players, coaches, and referees had the opportunity to register in-person last night at the Art Hauser Centre for the upcoming hockey season.

With the COVID-19 pandemic slowing down, Tyson Dallman, director of hockey operations, expects that there will be more players this year compared to last year.

“If you look at last year where our biggest deficiency in numbers were, it was at our younger ages. U7 was the lowest its been in a long time. And with our (U18s), with not playing hockey as much, they found other things to and maybe lost some of that passion for the game. However, I do expect our numbers to go up this season.”

The Prince Albert Northern Bears made it to the Esso Cup this past season, and with the city getting set to host the prestigious women’s hockey tournament next season, Dallman believes that this will encourage more girls in Prince Albert to lace them up.

“I think we’re doing a good job in terms of getting female players playing. But hopefully with the Esso Cup coming to Prince Albert, we’ll look to start some initiatives to get more girls playing.”

Dallman added that online registration for the upcoming season opened on June 7 and runs until August 29 and, with how things are looking, people should expect to pay a little more than in previous years.

“(Fees) will take a small jump. Just with where we’re at in the world, the price of everything is going up and we’re forecasting that it will go up this year. I think we’re still relatively low compared to the other major centers (like Regina and Saskatoon), but in terms of fees they will go up a bit.”

More information about registering for the upcoming season can be found on the Prince Albert Minor Hockey website.
