Local DJ uses music to raise money for Ukraine

Jun 13, 2022 | 8:00 AM

Almost 100 years after his father moved from Ukraine to Canada, Terry Chitrenia still feels the call of the homeland and the need to help out.

In the wake of the Russian invasion, Chitrenia felt like he needed to do his part to help displaced Ukrainians.

“With what’s going on with the war and stuff. They’ve got nowhere to go. They’re stuck and stuff so I figured I should maybe put myself in there because what would I have done if something happened to my family?” he said.

His father moved to Canada in 1927 and they still have family ties, he said.

“I’m doing it to help them out. Make sure they have clothes on their backs and food in their stomachs and stuff like that,” he said.

He is looking for some outside help too and will be taking donations or raffle items from his booth at the Prince Albert Street Fair on June 18 from noon until supper time.

The music from the booth will, of course, be Ukrainian.

Chitrenia has no firm goal for fundraising but is hopeful of getting at least $1,000 or more.

So far, he knows of seven families who have come from Ukraine to Prince Albert.

Those who want to donate and need more information can contact Chitrenia at 306-930-6934.
